I was just reading some comments about strict XML parsing in browsers and WYSIWYG editors, and I had a sudden flash of insight. To a computer there’s a very real distinction between semantics and presentation; to a human, they’re the same thing.
When I say “they’re the same thing,” I mean that I can’t tell the difference between bold text and strong text on my own. The only way I’m able to tell the difference is if my authoring tools help me, ie: they shows me the HTML. WYSIWYG editors, by their very nature, avoid doing this.
What we’re left with is a disconnect. Since semantics are effectively invisible to humans, What-You-See-Isn’t-What-You-Want.
“As a rule of thumb, do not place much reliance on rules of thumb!”
